Biography

Matthew Hua (he/him) burst into the film scoring world with the support of the NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship awarded by The American Association of People with Disabilities. Matthew is a hard-of-hearing composer, orchestrator, conductor, and violinist. While his hearing loss is ironic, Matthew’s music draws on his own and others’ experiences to stories through music.

Recent projects include VOXRAPTOR (Additional Music), DON’T LET THE PIGEON SING UP LATE (Composer’s Assistant) with Carlos Simon and Mo Willems and THE MORTIFICATION OF FOVEA MUNSON (Music Assistant) with Steven Tran and Justin Huertas, both at The Kennedy Center. The Northern Virginia Community Orchestra has performed world premieres of SOAR, C A FUGUE, and CABIN IN THE SNOW which featured Matthew’s conducting debut.

Matthew also has experience as Orchestra Librarian/Personnel Manager for Capital City Symphony and Orchestra Librarian/Social Media Coordinator for The American Pops Orchestra. He has worked as a Production Assistant on PBS film sets and Live Nation concerts; General and VIP Front-of-House for The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and Strathmore Performing Arts Center; and Office Manager for Georgetown University’s Department of Performing Arts.

Matthew is currently based in Chicago, IL where he is studying at Columbia College Chicago under Kubilay Uner, Lee Sanders, and Kaz Boyle. He completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University where he studied under Carlos Simon, Robynn Stilwell, and Angel Gil-Ordonez. When he is not working, Matthew can be found introducting friends to new board games, getting mileage for his runs, and finding new heights.
